Dr Guttmann, Father of the Paralympic Games:

If I ever did one good thing it was introducing sport as part of the rehabilitation of disabled people.

Dr Ludwig Guttmann's legacy was the Paralympic Games. You too could be a part of this story through leaving a gift in your Will to NPHT. Your support will enable us to make this unique, inspiring heritage and its stories of human endeavour truly accessible to all and challenge negative attitudes to disability.

We are:

  • the only completely disability-focused museum in the UK
  • the carer of the largest unique early Paralympic Games collection in the world
  • purely in existence to care for and share Paralympic Heritage

Without your support, our incredible Paralympic history is at risk.

Oasis Partnership:

The project has been far more than just giving disabled people the skills for employment, it’s raised their self-esteem and given them hope.

Why gifts in Wills are so important to the Trust

Leaving a gift in your will is one of the most powerful ways to create lasting change, long after your lifetime.

This wasn’t just good fun. Our group were able to see that people with disabilities – who looked like they did – could be heroes too.

In this video NPHT CEO, Vicky Hope-Walker explains more about us, and why we need your support:

Why is our work so important?

Despite the success of the London 2012 Paralympic Games, the charity Scope reported in 2016 that hate crimes towards people with disabilities had increased by 100%.

In 2021, when Will Perry returned to his hometown with a gold medal for swimming after representing ParalympicsGB in Tokyo, he found himself bullied, laughed at and described as non-human.

In 2025, the Heritage Alliance reported that access to heritage for disabled people hadn't shifted or improved since 2008.

  • Did you know that NPHT is a charity who relies largely on grants and voluntary income including gifts in Wills?
  • What we do is as important as how we do it. Our work is co-created and co-curated with disabled people whom we support on traineeships, work experience, collaborations and projects, empowering them to make changes.
  • Our Paralympic Heritage is one of the world’s most important disability collections.
  • One way of ensuring our ground-breaking work can continue and our unique resources are preserved is through a gift in your Will to NPHT.
  • Every gift regardless of size will enable this dream to come true. Just 1% of the value of your estate will make a difference.

If the work of NPHT has a meaningful connection to your life, please consider a gift in your Will and claim your place in our history.

What is a gift in a Will?

There are 3 main types of gift that you can specify in your Will.

  • A residuary gift is a share of your estate. Your estate refers to everything you owned, including money in your bank account, investments, and physical belongings such as your property and furnishings. You can leave a specific percentage of the value of your estate after any taxes or costs have been subtracted, and after you have made gifts to your loved ones.
  • A pecuniary gift is a fixed amount of money. This can be index-linked to preserve its real value over time.
  • A specific gift is a particular item, such as a house, stocks and shares or jewellery. Anything that’s of financial value to you. It may include Paralympic specific items.

Leaving a gift in your Will to charity may also help to reduce your Inheritance Tax rate. If 10% or more of your net Estate is given to charity then under current UK legislation, your Inheritance Tax rate drops from 40% to 36%. We recommend checking your position with a will writing professional.
