How to create your own storybook

Interested in learning about Storytelling?

This fun workshop with resident writer Steve Katon helped attendees learn how to write their own stories.

Despite the emergence of ebooks most writers will tell you very little compares to the thrill of holding a physical copy of their book in their hands! We wanted to recreate that experience for the young writers in our community (the two workshops were tailored for children aged from 5-9 and 10-13+ years).

Steve Katon showed the attendees how to create and get to know their characters. The young writers discovered their characters wants and needs, what they're afraid of and what's at stake for them, before setting the character off on their adventure using the proven structure of stories. Each of the young writers compiled their ideas into a physical book to take home!

About Steve Katon

My life changed beyond repair as a boy in 1977. While waiting with my family for The Spy Who Loved Me to start at the local cinema, a trailer came on introducing a place from ‘a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away....’ I knew at once that I had to go and live in this place no matter how far away or long ago it was and, for most of my daydreaming life, I've done just that.

While back in this galaxy, I graduated from The Open University with a first-class BA honours degree in English Literature (specialising in children’s literature & creative writing). I received a distinction for an MA in Creative Writing at Nottingham Trent University (specialising in scriptwriting and children's and young adult fiction). I live in Nottingham with my wife and two daughters. When not reading, writing or watching something, I'll be walking our springer spaniel.

I've loved storytelling all my life, I really enjoy studying and delving into structure and understanding how and why stories work, but ultimately, I just love the thrill of escaping into another world.

Workshops are free to attend with a suggested donation of £2 if you are able to.
